New border change suggestion #2

PoofessorP - 2021-02-04 02:47:28 UTC

(I just wanna preface this by saying I like the new change, just some things I think personally are gameplay affecting) The new change is: "All UHC game modes meetup: the border now shrinks based on the number of players still in game." And also that skybasing is much more enforced.

Suggestion #2: Chat tells you something like, "A player has died! The border will now shrink in xxx amount of time" As a warning, because every time I kill someone or just when I'm spectating games the border always shrinks a whole bunch while you'd be looting a persons body (for gear, healing etc) so it can be pretty hard to benefit off of kills or I just watch players die to suffocation due to be caught in the border.

This is an add on to my previous suggestion, it is the same thing basically except it adds a delay like say, 15 seconds for example after a player dies the border will shrink. This is to allow time for players to loot and safely move inside the new border

I agree, except the 15-second example is too long, I think 5-10 seconds is okay.

About the delay, there are technical reasons that make this hard to do without a major rewrite. In fact, there is a delay: it can be anything between 0 and 5 seconds.

The border may shrink when a player dies, but this depends on the number of players on. Moreover, the border can shrink regardless of whether a player has died or not.

Is there anything else you can do to make it easier or less punishing for players that get kills and happen to be right next to border? Not even just to me, but when I'm spectating players it often feels like players are being punished for getting kills. They get little to no time, because you also have to consider the time it takes to get to the players body, sort through all the junk for good stuff, it could be any number of things you need to grab off of a dead players body (Armor, Weapons, Healing, Misc) and that could take a fair bit amount of time when you get very little amounts of time before the border comes in. Actually I remember an instance where I was watching a game, and a player got a kill, instantly started running into the border, but he got stuck in the terrain and so he just died. But it also doesn't have to be a delay, I'm open to any changes that would make it easier for players that wouldn't make it punishing for players to go for kills, any ideas welcome <3

"it often feels like players are being punished for getting kills"

This is obviously not the intention and this only happens if you kill them at the border.

I think that a delay won't really help because if someone else dies just few seconds before you fight and kill someone at the border, the border will shrink on the items anyway. I think people should pay more attention to the border now that it is smaller. Avoiding having a full inventory helps getting the items that you want.

There isn't much I can do...

What about a border damage immunity for a certain amount of seconds after killing someone..? Maybe it's too much and can lead to people abusing it to escape battles?

For your first point, players can't really help it where they kill a player at, things just happen. I think even if you have complete awareness of the border you can still get screwed over by it, dumping out your junk before meetup to have an empty definitely helps with the new change and it's something I've been doing forever, but you wouldn't be able to help the fact that a person you kill has an inventory full of junk and those are the items you pick up.

I think a temporary immunity could be worth trying out! I feel like it wouldn't be used to escape battles personally, because you can still take damage from pvp and the way the border works on here is you just get stuck inside it and it does a ton of damage when you lose invincibility and players would be waiting outside to kill you, so I think it would put you at a disadvantage if you tried to use it to escape. I could be wrong but that's how I believe it would play out

With the previous border system, the border just kept shrinking until it stopped at an arbitrary size (from 500 to 250) that didn't take the number of players in game into consideration.

Now, the border size takes the number of players into consideration and it will stop shrinking depending on the number of players. Initially, the border speed was way too fast and after further tweaks, it has been capped at lower values. Now, the border speed is slower than it was before in some conditions (especially when the border is already small). I don't believe this suggestion is necessary anymore.
